Jo Jo foi formada em 71 quando Jay Ferguson e Mark Andes deixaram o Spirit. Eles pegaram o irmão do Mark, Matt, e o baterista Curley Smith prá completar. Mais adiante o Matt foi substituído por outro ex-membro do Spirit: John Stahely.
