Com a debandada do Herbal Mixture, Tony McPhee foi tocar com a John Dummer Blues Band, mas no fim dos 60 o produtor da United Artists, Andrew Lauder, o convenceu a reformar o Groundhogs, inicialmente como um quarteto, trazendo de volta o baixista John Cruickshank mais o baterista Ken Pustelnik e o gaitista Steve Rye. Com essa formação eles lançaram o primeiro álbum chamado "Scratchin' the Surface", em 68. Esse trabalho vai na mesma linha do que faziam o Fleetwood Mac, Chicken Shack e Savoy Brown no comecinho, e a distinção vai para a guitarra fuzzada do McPhee e a tendência de ultrapassar as limitações dos 12 compassos com riffs e mudanças inesperadas nos acordes.

Thank you so very much for this excellent series of posts. I am a huge English blues fan and have been searching for The Groundhogs complete series for some long time. The groundhogs were very much an under-rated - yet essential part of the UK Rock and Blues scene of the '60's and 70's.....and i am pleased that they are still remembered with such affection outside the UK.
